I am not a consumer
Despite my personal joy at helping solve the Y2K bug I know someone that was very sad on that day. Her name is Mye Laande. A transplant from elsewhere, she's fiercely proud of being an American, and on that day, thought she'd found a
word that was cleaving the world in two, and had a really great
idea on how to fix it. The horrible, bad, evil word, was:
consumer. and the word she replaced it with, was citizen.
She wrote up her solution, and on January 19, 2001, posted a really good
rant on it.
If you go a week, substituting "citizen" every time you see "consumer", you'll grok just how much untruth there is in the world.
Nobody read the story. It cratered.
As good as that piece was - she hasn't written anything since.
